The cacao bean, more commonly known in English as the cocoa bean, is the ingredient from which all the world’s chocolate is made. The cocoa bean is the seed that is produced by the cacao tree. These trees flourish in tropical climates, most commonly in regions located 20 degrees latitude either north or south of the equator. These trees are the producer of one of the world’s highest commodities, with over 3.8 million tonnes cocoa beans being produced each year. Cocoa beans have been used to make food ever since the Aztecs first discovered the value of these beans. It is said that between 1502 and 1504 that Christopher Columbus brought cocoa beans back to Spain from the ‘New World’ and that is believed to be the birth of chocolate in the western world. From there it has evolved into the massive business that it is today. Chocolate has evolved into one of the worlds greatest worldwide businesses.
